SHOCKING BARRICADE: UK MP KICKED OUT of Hong Kong!
In a jaw-dropping diplomatic drama, Hong Kong has just sent a British Member of Parliament packing, throwing UK-China relations into chaos just as the Labour government dares to step up economic ties!
Wera Hobhouse, the Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, arrived at Hong Kong full of hopes to meet her newborn grandson. But she was met with a heart-stopping twist: she was denied entry without any explanation—POOF! Gone!
The timing couldn’t be more outrageous. The Labour government is trying to smooth over feathers with China, sending officials like Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Beijing. Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Minister even made a trip to London! And then, WHAM! They throw a UK MP out on her ear.
“Is THIS how Beijing treats British parliamentarians while it rolls out the welcome mat for ministers?” shouted Ipac, the cross-border Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China to which Hobhouse belongs. The group slammed the move as a blatant slap in the face to Parliament, linking her expulsion to her fearless criticism of China’s dismal human rights record.
Hobhouse described being treated like a criminal when she landed, held at airport security, and then unceremoniously ousted back to the UK just hours later. “This cruel and upsetting blow came with zero explanation,” she lamented on Bluesky, claiming to be the first MP ever refused entry since Hong Kong returned to China in ’97.
And get this: her husband, a businessman, was allowed to stroll into the territory while she was kicked to the curb. What a double standard!
“You better believe we will demand answers from the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities!” fumed Lammy in a statement, making it clear this drama isn’t over yet. The British Consulate in Hong Kong is on high alert, raising the alarm bells over this shocking violation.
Even Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey couldn’t contain his outrage, calling the snub “heartless” and “totally unacceptable.”
Hobhouse’s expulsion raises serious questions about the iron grip China has on dissent and criticism. Following a long history of restricting entry to foreign individuals—journalists, academics, you name it—this latest incident pins the spotlight on Beijing’s increasing intolerance.
As these international tensions escalate, will the UK stand firm against these audacious affronts? Buckle up; the story is far from over!
