LEGENDARY WWII ACE PILOT PASSES AWAY AT 103: A HERO REMEMBERED!
In a heart-wrenching farewell, America bids adieu to Donald McPherson, the last surviving "ace" pilot from World War II, who has soared into the heavens at the astonishing age of 103! This fearless Navy fighter pilot, credited with knocking down an incredible five enemy planes, leaves behind a legacy that transcends the skies!
A LIFE OF COURAGE AND DEVOTION
McPherson, a true warrior of the Pacific theater aboard the mighty USS Essex, faced the ferocious Japanese forces during the war’s climax. His commendable service earned him the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal and a staggering three Distinguished Flying Crosses! But while medals glittered, McPherson himself preferred to shine brightly in the roles of faithful father, devoted husband, and community champion!
Daughter Beth Delabar remembers her father saying that when all is said and done, he wanted to be known not as a war hero, but as a man of unwavering faith! "His first priority was always faith," she echoes, capturing the essence of a man whose heart was just as big as his accomplishments in the skies.
A GLORIOUS FAREWELL: HONORS AND MEMORIES
Recently celebrated as the last living U.S. ace by the American Fighter Aces Association, McPherson was honored only days before his passing at the riveting Victory at Sea event! To achieve the title of "ace," a pilot must down five or more enemy aircraft, and McPherson was a master in that arena!
From his eager enlistment in 1942 at just 18 years old, to his heart-pounding missions flying the F6F Hellcat against adversaries, McPherson’s life was anything but ordinary. He recalls with gripping clarity the moment he knocked two Japanese planes from the sky, an act of bravery that sends chills down the spine!
FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO THE BALLFIELD
However, beyond the battlefield, it was back home on the family farm in Adams, Nebraska, where McPherson truly soared. He committed his life to uplifting his community, igniting passion for local sports by spearheading baseball and softball leagues for youth. His spirit was so legendary that the town immortalized him and his wife Thelma by naming McPherson Field in their honor, a testament to his dedication to family, friends, and above all, community!
As we remember Donald McPherson, let’s celebrate not just his incredible wartime feats but the loving, humble man who transformed lives beyond the horizon. His soaring spirit and heartfelt legacy will forever echo through the generations!
