EU officials are raising eyebrows, claiming the factory is using Chinese labor and primarily importing its essential components, including batteries! This raises the alarm bells about REAL economic contribution to Europe.
János Bóka, Hungary’s Europe minister, tried to play it cool, saying Budapest wasn’t privy to the probe but acknowledged that any major investment in Hungary quickly gets EU scrutiny. “This is no surprise. We are prepared!” he exclaimed.

Since the Foreign Subsidies Regulation went live in 2023, it has thrown a wrench in the plans of several Chinese companies, including BYD, which faced tariffs up to 17% from a previous investigation! Sabine Weyand, the EU’s top trade official, put her foot down, saying, “We’re not interested in investments that are simple assembly operations without added value!”
